The Power of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is usually noted as a remedy for the common cold. This water-soluble vitamin is always on active duty and therefore the body needs a constant supply and not just during cold season either! The body does not store vitamin C and any extra is excreted through urine so a diet full of vitamin C rich foods is important.
- Important for normal growth and development
- Antioxidant that blocks damage caused by free radicals
- Forms an important protein used to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels
- Heals wounds and forms scar tissue
- Repairs and maintains cartilage, bones, and teeth
Vitamin C may also be used in the case of gum disease, skin infections, bronchitis, stomach ulcers caused by bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, tuberculosis, dysentery and infections of the bladder and prostate.
According to the National Institutes of Health, the following fruits and vegetables are high sources of vitamin C:
- Citrus fruits and juices, such as orange and grapefruit
- Kiwi fruit
- Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries
- Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower
- Green and red peppers
- Spinach, cabbage, turnip greens, and other leafy greens
- Sweet and white potatoes
- Tomatoes and tomato juice
- Winter squash
Scurvy which can cause lethargy, bleeding gums, loss of teeth and eventually death, used to be an issue especially in the days of pirates where fresh fruits and vegetables became scarce on ships, now vitamin C deficiency is quite rare. Thankfully vitamin C is a relatively easy vitamin to incorporate into the diet so there are no excuses for deficiency!
