Oxygen: A Secret Cancer Weapon
By: Dr. Catanzaro
Have you ever tried holding your breath, maybe under water or through a tunnel, how long did you last? Even hiking or doing some other physically demanding activity in high altitudes where there is less air and therefore less oxygen, quickly proves that oxygen is needed not only for energy, but in order to sustain life! In fact every cell of your body requires oxygen in order to live and thrive in health, but in a disease state like cancer, oxygen has gone suspiciously missing. In 1931 Dr. Warburg won his first Nobel Prize for proving cancer is caused by a lack of oxygen respiration in cells. He stated in an article titled The Prime Cause and Prevention of Cancer that “the cause of cancer is no longer a mystery; we know it occurs whenever any cell is denied 60% of its oxygen requirements.” Dr. Warburg went on to share that cancer cells rely on the fermentation of sugar to meet their energy needs.
Gasping for Air!
Both oxygen and glucose are needed by the body, oxygen being in greater demand by a healthy body than glucose. What happens when oxygen levels are low in a cell? According to a study from the University of Georgia, they found that “long-term lack of oxygen in cells may be a key driver of cancer growth. The study was published in the early online edition of the Journal of Molecular Cell Biology.” Cells that are oxygen-deprived turn to another energy source to produce ATP which is basically the fermentation of glucose through a process called glycolysis.
What instigates low oxygen levels in cells?
- Toxins – just think of a cluttered, jam-packed room, can you fit much of anything else in there? When cells become clogged with toxic buildup, oxygen has limited access. In fact, if your body is operating in a state of acidity, which results in large part by an over-consumption of meats, grains, sugars, and soft drinks, it has to balance the blood by dumping the toxins into the cells.
- Poor circulation – oxygen needs movement and a transport like the iron-rich hemoglobin protein, it needs to be able to circulate throughout the body, permeating every cell.
- Lactic acid – you may be familiar with lactic acid as the reason for your sore muscles after an intense workout, but cancer cells also produce lactic acid. Lactic acid limits the transport of oxygen from cell to cell, which of course is desperately needed to prevent cancer growth and so a circular problem ensues.
You would think that just proper breathing of fresh air would flood your cells with oxygen, if only it were so simple! Most of the time the air that you breathe contains some form of pollutants and even in a hypothetically oxygen-perfect world, hemoglobin is still required to transport oxygen to cells. Anemia which is an iron-deficiency affects the level of hemoglobin in your system and therefore the transporting ability of oxygen to cells. As you can see every system is interdependent and requires health in order for the whole body to function in health. In the next post, we will discuss ways to oxygenate your body and spoil cancer’s next move!
