Nutrigenomics – The Future of Nutrition
The one-size-fits all approach works great for loungewear, but when it comes to your health and the foods you eat, you need a tailor-made plan. Diets and nutrition plans have commonly treated the masses, but not individuals. Our bodies are unique as demonstrated by our genetic code so wouldn’t it make sense that our bodies would have different responses to food?
Science is now beginning to uncover the “why” behind varying responses to nutrients. We all probably know someone who is seemingly unaffected by frequent feedings of fast food and someone else who tows the line nutritionally and would never let a morsel of fried food pass through their lips, yet struggle with their weight. Seems unfair, so what is the problem and better yet what is the solution?
What is Nutrigenomics?
In a nutshell, nutrigenomics is the interaction between diet and genes. The foods we eat contain nutrients that affect our genome to varying degrees and in various ways. Our genetics reflect our unique differences, including our body’s adapted survival skills. Depending on our code, a nutrient or food group that is pure health to one person may have minimal or even a negative consequence to another person.
Nutrigenomics and YOU!
On an individual level this means that your visits to the doctor or nutritionist have the capacity to take on a much more effective and beneficial nutrition strategy for disease prevention and optimal health. The light bulb moment is that we can influence the genetic expression of our genes by switching the bad genes off and the good genes on through personalized nutrition.
Of course DNA analysis and the interpretation of that information into a practical eating plan is still in its formative stages and can be a long learning curve. But if you know that your family has a history of a specific disease, it could be potentially life-saving to find a doctor who is familiar with genetic testing and specialized nutrition, in order to counteract a potential genetic malfunction. Genetic tests are already available for more than 1,700 diseases (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/GeneTests/).
According to the Journal of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics, Celiac disease is one example for which personalised nutrition is currently being used. This debilitating disease results from an inability to tolerate gluten-containing foods in the diet. It appears that several genetic changes are involved, the most consistent of which are genetic variants in the HLA-DQ (DQ2 and/or DQ8) genes. Such changes are necessary but not sufficient for the development of the disease. However, measurement of such changes indicates a high level of risk with a high degree of probability. Imagine if your fatigue, bloat, and digestive issues could be cured with a simple elimination of gluten from your diet? Your health is worth investigation and investment!
Genetic testing can provide concrete answers to the mystery that sometimes shrouds disease.
