MTHFR…The Missing Link?
Do you or somebody you know suffer with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, reoccurring miscarriages, migraines… possibly cardiovascular issues? These are just some of the health problems associated with an MTHFR mutation. Are you an American who is white, Hispanic or of Asian descent then there’s a higher probability for this genetic mutation. Knowledge is power, and this just might be the missing link to you or a family member’s health struggles. Many people have some form of malfunction in their genetic code, but are not affected in any significant capacity and a genetic abnormality does not constitute a mutant or defective status! It is to your benefit that you seek out the source of your ailments and address the underlying cause once and for all.
What is MTHFR?
MTHFR is an enzyme that helps process folic acid or folate. Folate aids the body in the breakdown, use, and production of proteins. Another role of folate is converting an amino acid called homocysteine to another amino acid called methionine. These amino acids are important, because they are critical for a majority of body functions. Although, having an excess of homocysteine can be detrimental to your health and increase your risk for a variety of diseases.
Why is Methionine Important?
1.Turn genes on and off (gene regulation)
2.Process chemicals and toxins (biotransformation)
3.Build neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, epinephrine)
4.Process hormones (estrogen)
5.Build immune cells (T cells, NK cells)
6.DNA and RNA synthesis (Thymine aka 5-methyluracil)
7.Produce energy (CoQ10, carnitine, ATP)
8.Produce protective coating on nerves (myelination)
Not to insult your intelligence, but just in case you missed this in school, everyone has two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent, forming your unique genetic code. This means that everyone has two copies of the MTHFR gene. Variants or abnormalities in this gene are categorized as C677T and A1298C. It is possible that you could have two variants one resulting from each parent or perhaps you will have only one or better yet none! The C677T variant causes more problems with the MTHFR enzyme than the A1298C variant.
Cracking the Disease Code
Here are some health conditions that are associated with a malfunctioning MTHFR enzyme. This does not mean that because you have one of these conditions that you possess this genetic MTHFR variant but it is information to take into consideration when seeking treatment.
Deep Vein Thrombosis
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Symptoms are more severe and may also include blood clots
