Insulin Resistance…A Fat Incubator?
The Weight-Loss Series
Have you become middle heavy? Expanding at alarming rates? Maybe it’s a manly beer belly that seems to be growing with every passing year with no beer needed! Or that cute little muffin top as a kid that has grown with you over the years and has now relegated you to empire waist shirts to accommodate the excess protrusion. These could be signs of insulin resistance and could be the culprit behind your horizontal growth!
What is Insulin?
When you satisfy that craving for something sweet, the pancreas is put on alert to release insulin in order to chauffeur glucose in the blood to your cells so that you can have a fleeting moment of energy from that cupcake! If ignorance is bliss, then you may want to cover your eyes for this next part; insulin causes your cells to turn glucose into fat and then locks it in place. Yes you could consider insulin a fat incubator! What happens when your body gets stuck in insulin releasing mode? According to the National Institutes of Health, “insulin resistance is a condition in which the body produces insulin but does not use it effectively. When people have insulin resistance, glucose builds up in the blood instead of being absorbed by the cells, leading to type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.”
Does the shoe fit?
Are you overweight? Are you physically inactive? Are you genetically prone to insulin resistance? Do you have high blood pressure? Do you have high cholesterol? Do you have polycystic ovarian syndrome?
If you could answer yes to all those questions, then run don’t walk to the doctor! Having any of these risk factors is an indication that it’s time to get serious about your health, don’t wait until the shoe fits!
Is there Hope?
Yes! Thankfully through diet and exercise insulin resistance can usually be reversed. As you may have guessed if you want to decrease insulin production, you will have to decrease your sweets and simple carbohydrate intake, this means processed foods, white pasta and breads need to say farewell. Instead fill your plate with fruits, protein and fiber filled-foods such as brown rice, whole grain breads and non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, leafy greens, carrots, and asparagus. According to The National Institutes of Health, “The Diabetes Prevention Program and other large studies proved that people with prediabetes can often prevent or delay diabetes if they lose a modest amount of weight by cutting fat and calorie intake and increasing physical activity—for example, walking 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.”
So many diseases can be avoided simply by not partaking in the typical American diet! The value of a healthy diet and daily exercise should not be underrated. Take the first step today towards your health tomorrow!
